“ Michael Staniford has been
making wine in the Great Southern region since 1995 principally as
senior
winemaker for Alkoomi with additional experience as a contract maker
for other
wineries. The business will be built around single vineyard wines. The
first
two releases are a Chardonnay (Mendoza clone) from a 20 year old
vineyard in
Albany and a Cabernet Sauvignon from a 15 year old vineyard in Mount
Barker.
The quality of these two wines is every bit as one would expect.”
Great
Southern Reserve Chardonnay 2012
Keeps you entertained from
the first hello to the final
goodbye. Indeed it saves its best anecdotes till last. Powerful
grapefruit, white peach, mineral and ginger notes
before a dry textural finish. The
whole show is good but the final push of flavour is rousing. Screwcap.

Great Southern Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
A high-quality wine from top
to toe,
opening with deep, bright
crimson-purple,moving to a bouquet flooded with cassis and
intriguing touches of spice, thence to
a medium to
full-bodied, but perfectly balanced, palate: here, the juicy
cassis fruit is invested with a sense of gravitas by firm tannins and
cedary oak. Bred to stay.

Nick’s Wine Merchants Review march 2015 :
2012 Staniford Great Southern Reserve
Chardonnay 94 Points
Brilliant pale straw colour with a slight greenish tinge around the
edges and a watery hue. Attractive aromas of ripe white peaches
intermixed with
some butterscotch and cashew arise from the glass with
nougat and spice end notes. Medium to full bodied the palate features a
creamy texture
with flavours of white peach, cashew, butterscotch and
light honeycomb over a background of nougat and spice. Clean dry finish
with good
balancing acidity. Long aftertaste of cashew, butterscotch,
subtle honeycomb and citrusy nougat.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Great
Southern Reserve Chardonnay 2011
Deep glowing
yellow/greens; the grapes
were grown in the Albany subregion from mature, low-yielding vines, the
fruit of sufficient depth and intensity to justify the
use of 100%
new French oak: despite this
power, and resultant complexity, the wine is so well balanced it
retains elegance. The finish and aftertaste are especially
impressive.

Great
Southern Reserve Chardonnay 2010
Medium straw green : Michael
Staniford’s
experience shines through in this
beautifully crafted wine, with fruit and oak seamlessly interwoven ;
the fruit is in the
grapefruit/white stone fruit
spectrum and although the French oak used was new it never threatens to
dominate.
Rating 95. To 2017.

This
is a new name on
the scene from experienced Michael Staniford. The wine is mighty
impressive and
almost atypically Aussie.
It's tight and lean with a fine
savoury minerally character
that
threads
through a beautifully integrated palate. The oak is deliberately
underplayed while the subtle
flavours of brioche and light custard apple are
appealing.

Pure
and
defined cabernet on the nose. Lots of blackcurrant and dark plum aromas
with
some nice spicy and black
olive influences. The oak is well applied and the tannins
fine and
supple. It has a juicy richness and good intensity. A very stylish and
impressive cabernet
debut from the former Alkoomi
winemaker.

An
impressive Great Southern
chardonnay. Complex mealy stone fruit aromas
with a thread of minerally grapefruit. The palate is beautifully
composed with lovely supplementary oak
and crisp minerally acid. It's very long and displays multi-layered
complexity. Excellent.

....One of the small makers is Staniford, owned by Michael Staniford,
the former longserving winemaker of Alkoomi
Estate......there is an impressive assemblage of winemaking skill and
experience in the winery during vintage, the benefits obvious to see.
